Look at any house after dark and the shape you recognize is the roofline. It is the longest continuous line on the building, and it has open sky behind it, which is why light on it reads from a distance. Put light on it and the house has an edge again, which is the effect people are actually after.That is the reason permanent systems live at the roof edge, and the reason a single run there does more than fixtures scattered around the yard. One continuous line, installed one time, carrying the whole outline: that is the argument.
What roofline lighting actually consists of
Roofline lighting is an aluminum channel matched to your trim with LEDs set into it, mounted along the edge and left in place year round. That channel is doing double duty, holding the diodes and keeping them out of sight. Because it matches the trim, it disappears into the roof edge in daylight.
Where the run goes
The main roofline is the anchor, then the design decides what else is worth adding. After the main line come the gables, the dormers and the porch, added only where it adds something. Outline everything and you end up with a shape and no depth, which is the most common way a roofline plan goes wrong.Look along a completed run at eye level down the elevation, since a straight line over that span does not happen by accident.

One line, a lot of uses
After install control is an app. Warm white on a normal night. Holiday colors for the season. A single color for Halloween. School colors on a Friday. The setting that gets the most hours is almost always the plain one, which is not what most buyers expect going in.
What drives the size of the job
Two houses on the same street can quote well apart. Linear feet is the first one, but it is not the main one. Complexity does more: a simple gable runs fast, and a roof with six changes of direction, three dormers and a turret does not. Height is the other one, since upper runs need different access.
Does it go on the gutter?
Homeowners expect it to hang off the gutter, since that is how the temporary version goes up. A permanent channel does not work that way. That distinction matters since a gutter is not a permanent mounting point, and anything fastened to one inherits its problems.
